The global entrepreneurial movement, Startup Weekend came to Cork for the first time from 5 – 7 April 2013. Powered by the Kauffman Foundation, Startup Weekend has brought together over 100,000 entrepreneurs across 300 cities, creating over 5,000 startups. This was an excellent opportunity for Cork, showcasing the entrepreneurial culture here and bringing together talented coders and programmers, inventors, entrepreneurs and established business people from across the region and all over Ireland.
Teams from Ireland and the Britain gathered in University College Cork (UCC) for the 54-hour startup event. Developers, marketers and designers came together to form teams and pursue ideas for new startups. Teams were guided by a number of coaches ranging from serial entrepreneurs, seasoned CEOs, tech experts and master marketers.
The ideas were then judged by a panel comprising Gareth Keane, an investor at Qualcomm Ventures; tech investor Sean O’Sullivan; Eamon Leonard from Engine Yard; and Pat Phelan, CEO at Trustev. The event was won by Task Me Now for their BrainCredit App which helps companies crowdsource for expertise for specific projects.
